The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
